The Commissioner’s recap

Nugent takes the crown, whiffs the total by three touchdowns

Your Week 3 champion and holder of the twenty is Brady Nugent, "Brads Discord," who called eleven games right and is hereby crowned the Duke of Despite Himself. Because make no mistake, Brady, you won this week while pinning the Monday night total at 55 against an actual 34 — off by 21, the second-worst guess in the entire pool. You won the arm-wrestle and set the table on fire. Winners win, apparently, with their eyes closed. The week belonged to the chaos merchants. Chicago waxed Philadelphia 27-7 while 94% of you had the Eagles, and that same 94% got Seattle-Washington wrong when the Commanders snuck it 33-31. Carolina, Cincinnati, the Rams, the Saints — the pool got cooked on six separate games. Ninety-four percent taking Seattle and getting fried is not a bad beat, folks, that is a group project failing. Special recognition to Jake, "The Probably gonna losers," a team name that has become a mission statement. Six points, dead last but one, a Hail Mary tie call on New England-Jacksonville that came in 6-35 — the Jaguars did not tie anybody, Jake, they held a funeral. And you topped it off with the worst total in the pool, 56 versus 34, off by 22. You threw the Hail Mary AND overthrew the receiver by a full county. Propping up the bottom is Donnie Brown, "Pick Around & Find Out." You found out. Five points, five-and-ten, and a Monday total of 49 that missed by 15. Karen and Jim Harte and Brennan "Pick'n my butt" round out the cellar at seven apiece — Brennan, the team name is doing a lot of self-scouting and I respect the honesty. Now to the only race that matters. The season is about games won, and your leader is Julie Nugent, "Show me your Jules," with 32 correct and zero weekly wins to her name — the tortoise of the Rudy Bowl, quietly stacking games while everyone chases twenties. Greg, Holly, and Susie sit one back at 31, and Brady's weekly win only lifts him to fifth at 30. Winning the week is nice, Brady. Winning the season requires you to stop guessing 55. A final salute to Carson Alnor, who tied for sixth this week at nine points and yet sits nearly dead last for the season at 19 games won. One good week does not undo the archive. Same time next week, and for the love of the total, someone submit a Monday number under 40.
